The city is responsible for the airport, animal control, municipal court, parks and recreation, building inspections, planning and zoning, economic development, utilities, convention center and the municipal rose garden in addition to other government activities.

Lone Star
Legal Aid is the only free or pro bono legal service available in East Texas. Lone
Star Legal Aid provides free civil (no criminal cases are accepted) legal
representation to those who meet income requirements. You will need to complete their application
form and they will determine your eligibility for their services. If you
qualify for the service, and a staff or volunteer attorney is available,
one will be assigned to represent you.
Lone Star
is limited in the number of cases they can accept and sometimes even if you
qualify, they may not be able to assist you.
If you are not assisted because of a lack of resources, you may apply
again in a couple of months.

Lawyer Referral Service is a public service of the State Bar of Texas designed to help you find an
attorney. East Texas
attorneys enrolled in this service agree to provide an abbreviated
consultation appointment, usually 30 minutes. The fee for the
appointment will not be more than $20.00. The phone
number is 1-800-252-9690 and it is often busy, so you many have to call
more
than once. When you get an answer, you will listen to a recording that
explains how the service works. A referral service representative will
come on the line
and ask what kind of legal problem you have and what county your case
is in.
You will be given the name and phone number of an attorney in your
geographical
area who practices that type of law. You
will call the attorney and make an appointment. Most attorneys will want you to
come in to their office, but some will do a phone consultation. Please confirm the $20.00 fee when you make
your appointment.
