Settlement Week
The District Courts, the County Courts at Law, and the County Court of Smith County designate two weeks each year as SETTLEMENT WEEK. This designation is made to comply with Sec. 155.001 et seq., of the Texas Civil Practice and Remedies Code and to allow the Courts, through the process of mediation, to dispose of as many pending cases as possible. Click here for a copy of the order establishing Settlement Week.
All mediators who provide their services are doing so pro bono. Each mediation will be scheduled for two hour sessions or longer at the mediator’s discretion. Click here for the 2010 Mediator Volunteer Form.
There is no charge for the mediation. A donation of $100 is made to the Smith County Bar Foundation for administration of Settlement Week and must accompany each Request for Mediation.
Cases will be limited to those involving one plaintiff and one defendant with up to $25,000 in controversy and family law cases. It is the requesting party’s responsibility to notify the opposing party’s counsel of this requirement. Pro bono cases will be accepted according to the local Lone Star Legal Aid guidelines. The mediation will not be held unless all parties have made their donation. If the case is scheduled and settled before the mediation, no refunds will be given.
